Law on the Bay: Marshfield, Oregon 1874 - 1944
is the first in a series chronicling the municipal law enforcement agencies located on Coos Bay. November 1874, Marshfield became the
first incorporated city within Coos County. Prior to downtown Marshfield, local Natives lived in a small village name atsisis (ahts - ee - khees).
After the arrival of the Coose Bay Company, James C. tolman, a man of vision, came to the bay seeking profitable investments. As Tolman explored
the bay he noted the advantages of different points on the bay after which he selected an area he developed as Marshfield. |
