Law on the Bay:

Marshfield, Oregon 1874 - 1944

Law on the Bay: Marshfield, Oregon 1874 - 1944 is the first in a series chronicling the municipal law enforcement agencies located on Coos Bay. November 1874, Marshfield became the first incorporated city within Coos County. Prior to downtown Marshfield, local Natives lived in a small village name atsisis (ahts - ee - khees). After the arrival of the Coose Bay Company, James C. Tolman, a man of vision, came to the bay seeking profitable investments. As Tolman explored the bay he noted the advantages of different points on the bay after which he selected an area he developed as Marshfield.

The history of Marshfield law enforcement was based on newspaper accounts, court records, coroner's records, ancestry information and written texts. Further editions within the Law on the Bay series will include Coos Bay, Eastside, Empire, and North Bend.

Donation:
A donation of $1 from the sale of each book will be applied to benefit the historic Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery, located at 750 Seventh Street at the intersection of Ingersol. The cemetery was officially dedicated as the International Order of Oddfellows (I.O.O.F,) Cemetery in 1891 -- a community burying ground for citizens of Empire, Marshfield, and North Bend. During its primary period of use, from the late 1880's until 1930, over 2000 people were buried in the cemetery. As the area's population continued to grow, the cemetery proved to be insufficient in size, and in 1921, the I.O.O.F. lodge dedicated Sunset Memorial Park which them became the area's primary burying ground. In 1944, the City of Coos Bay acquired the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery by virtue of a Marshall's deed. Throughout the years many groups have generously helped to maintain and restore the cemetery, a key local historical site. In addition, the cemetery adjoins Marshfield High School, and students volunteer on workdays and mark veterans graves for Memorial Day and Veteran's Day.
